Plant Conium maculatum of the family
Umbelliferae, native to Europe, W Asia, and N
Africa. Reaching up to 2 m/6 ft high, it
bears umbels of small white flowers. The
whole plant, especially the root and fruit,
is poisonous, causing paralysis of the
nervous system. Hemlock is also a type of
conifer, genus Tsuga, whose crushed leaves
have a similar smell.
